Palazzo della Marra

You are here Home  > Palazzi >  Palazzo della Marra

A 16th century Palace, located in Barletta’s city centre since 1743 it was the residence of important noble families, from the Orsini to the Marra. Palazzo Marra represents the unique example of the “ Barocco Leccese”, in the city and outside the Salento peninsula. Of particular concerns are the entrance, decorated with two allegories, the oldness and the youth, and the main elegant balcony, with five support brackets adorned with dogs, monsters and griffins. On the frieze along the façade and the loggia, it is possible to notice the writing “DELLA MARRA”, ornate with allegories (allegorical figures) depicting the stages of human life. Further decorations and restoration works were offered both by the family Fraggianni, from 1700 the palace owner, and by the constructor Donato Ceci, who bought it in the early 1900. In 1958, the state property acquired it and implemented a complete restoration project. Today the palace houses the Pinachoteca entitled to “Giuseppe de Nittis”, following the copious donations of paintings, engraving and pastels by De Nittis’ wife, Leontine Gruvelle.
