This historical “ Osteria”, called the House of Poison, is today known as The Tavern of the Challenge. According to the tradition, a chivalrous banquet was held buy the Spanish forces in honor of the French, who were defeated during a battle. During the banquet the Spanish captain, Diego di Mendoza, challenged the adversaries by comparing their virtues with his allies, the Italians. Nevertheless, the imprisoned French knights, among those stands out an eminent figure, Charles La Motte, could not accept this sort of offense, that is being compared to the incompetent and betrayer Italians. Consequently on February 13, 1503, thirteen Italians knights headed by Ettore Fieramosca engaged in a tourney against thirteen French knights, during the renowned Challenge of Barletta. With their proud reaction, the Italians, who still did not possess a defined territory but their own cultural and identity, enacted the birth of the Italian national conscience. The Tavern of the Challenge is the place where the representation of the historical knightly tournament starts. Recently its 500th anniversary was celebrated. Hosting exhibitions and events, it is one of the most visited museums in Barletta. Rooms are decorated with the period furnishing style: shields and torches on the bare stone walls, a large fireplace and candelabra hung on the walls lend great fascination to the rooms.
